Bangladeshi Recipes

 Bangladesh is a tropical country in South Asia. Rice is our staple food. We are known as "Machh-e-Bhat-e-Bangali".  Bangladeshi recipes refer to the Bengali recipe prevalent in Bangladesh. Our recipes are very Easy recipes. Bangladesh was the eastern part of Bengal before the Partition of India. The Bangladeshi recipes are almost similar to West Bengal in India. It has considerable regional variations also. Rice recipes are one of the most staple recipes in our country. There is another very important recipes. That is vegetarian recipe.  Over 80%people of our country live in villages. So our main foods are rice, vegetables, fish, beef, chicken, mutton, lentil(dal) etc. The most important flavours in Bangladeshi recipes are garlic, ginger, lime, coriander, cumin, turmeric and chilli. In sweet dishes, cardamom and cinnamon are amongst the natural flavours. There are some Pithas and Sweet-meats here. They are- a wide variety of Pitha - steamed rice cakes or Vapa Pitha, Chitoi Pitha, Pan Pitha,  patishapta etc. 


Sweets and Desserts:
Bangladesh has  a great reputation of sweets and desserts. We, the people of Bangladesh are fond of sweets and desserts. Some sweets and desserts are as follows;
  • Chomchom: Tangail's Porabarir chomchom is famous.    Kalo jam, Golap Jam,  Rosho-golla,Jilapi etc.
  • Firni: It is also known as Payesh
  • Halua:  There are different types of halua (semolina - shuji, carrot - gajor, almond - badam, boot etc..)
  • Doi - sweetened homemade creamy yoghurt 
  • Shemai - sweet vermicelli in cinnamon, cardamon and star anise infused milk.
  • Shondesh: In Bangladesh, this is a palm sugar and rice flour fritter unlike the Shondesh of West Bengal
  • Chhana: It is also known as kacha shondesh, is an unrefined form of shondesh
  • Jorda - sweetened rice or vermicili, fried in ghee (clarified butter)
  • Shon-papri- Sweet Gram Flour Noodles, very fine delicate with a melt in mouth texture.
  • Rosh-malai - small roshogollas in a sweetened milk base; Comilla is famous for its Roshmalai.

  Regional specialties:

We have some regional specialties. Such as;

  • Alu Bhaji occurs across the region.
  • Luchi: It is one kind of a flatbread.
  • Shujir Halua: A semolina based halua from across the region.
  • Fuchka: It is a variant of popular spicy snack.

* Other famous Bangladeshi dishes:

  • Torkari; i,e vegetable curry.
  • Biryani:  Kachchi (mutton) Biriyani, Chicken Biriyani & Tehari (beef).
  • Khichuri (rice cooked with lentils)
  • There are several styles of Bangladeshi bread, including Luchi, Nan, Tondul rooti, chapati and paratha.
